What Reading Taught Me About Work

I read before bed almost every night. Maybe you do too.

My aim is never to finish a book in a night. Instead, it’s a habit. Reading for 10 or 20 minutes, or one chapter a night pushes the book along until a week or two later and I’m done.

Often our work requires the same discipline and habit-building. Rather than sit down at our computers to get everything done in one sitting, we can block off a chunk of time for deep, focused work and aim to make progress.

“Finished” isn’t always about getting to the end at once. It can be about pacing yourself and building the habit to make meaningful progress regularly. Finished for this hour. Finished for the day. Not finished with the project.

Keep going.
